In an interview with Develop, Hilmar Pétursson, CEO of CPP Games, has announced the company’s intention to support their upcoming PS3 shooter Dust 514 across future Sony consoles. On Monday evening Develop posted an interview with Hilmar Pétursson of CCP Games, the company responsible for EVE Online and Dust 514, during which they discussed the current state of the MMO market.

During the interview Mr Pétursson said:

If there is a PlayStation 4 – which I can tell you now I have no idea if there is – but if there was, we would build Dust for that console as well. It will most likely be a revision of the experience, as with all updates, and could allow people to play across PS3 and 4.

There has been sceptism surrounding how successful Dust 514 could possibly be given its release so close to the end of the PS3s life cycle, however the news today that the game will be supported on future consoles suggests that it has a strong future ahead of it.

Dust 514 is set to be a revolutionary addition to the universe established with EVE Online. While minute-to-minute gameplay will be familiar to most fans of the first-person-shooter, what sets Dust apart from others in the genre is the links it shares with MMORPG EVE Online. Players in EVE will be able to hire mercenary groups in Dust to battle over areas of planets, affecting corporations in both games. Players on the PS3 FPS will be able to interact with players from the PC MMO through a number of methods, not least of all being able to combat one using aerial bombardment and ground based weapons.

Dust 514 may well be one of the most ambitious first person shooters of the current generation. Much like EVE set a standard for true MMOs, creating one cohesive universe which could be fundamentally altered by the actions of a single corporation, Dust 514 may well usher in a new level of interaction between gamers over different genre and platform.
